The exhibition 'In a Silent Way' at Galerie Gisèle Linder follows the concept 'Paintings on the Move' exhibition at three Basle museums (Museum fuer Gegenwartskunst, Kunstmuseum and Kunsthalle). It was created by Gisèle Linder and Marion Wild (New York) and exists outside the gallery's usual program. A broader definition of painting is used in the context of the exhibition, not only as oil on canvas in the traditional sense but also as painted sculpture or reworked photography which can only be understood as analysis of at least several works or even the entire work of an artist. This wider definition creates the possibility to see and experience not only the artist but also the medium in a different context. Instead of presenting a plurality of different artists the exhi-bition focuses on the body of works from just a few artists in order to get a fuller understanding of their different approaches. The title of the show, borrowed from the well known album by Miles Davis, indicates a relationship to America where four of the five artists originate and as an allusion to the general programming of the gallery, which is known for its quiet and poetic exhibitions (monochrome painting, concrete art).

Die Ausstellung 'In a Silent Way', in der Galerie Gisèle Linder, die dem Konzept 'Painting on the move' der Kunstmuseen Basel (Museum für Gegenwartskunst, Kunstmuseum und Kunsthalle) folgt, ist in enger Zusammenarbeit zwischen Gisèle Linder und Marion Wild (New York) entstanden und steht ausserhalb des Galerlieprogramms. Malerei muss in diesem Kontext weit gefasst werden: Sie wird nicht im herkömmlichen Sinne, d.h. als Farbe auf einem Farbträger, präsentiert, sondern Malerei wird hier auch als bemalte Skulptur oder bearbeitete Photographie aufgefasst, die erst in der Auseinandersetzung mit den jeweiligen Werken des Künstlers als solche verstanden werden kann. Durch die breit angelegte Definition entsteht die Möglichkeit, nicht nur den Künstler, sondern auch das Medium in einem anderen Kontext zu sehen und zu erfahren. Nicht einzelne Werke einer Vielzahl verschiedener Künstler stehen im Zentrum, sondern ganze Werkgruppen einiger weniger Kunstschaffender, um dem Betrachter eine Annäherung an das jeweilige Werk zu ermöglichen. Die Wahl des Titels 'In a Silent Way', wie das wohl bekannteste Album des amerikanischen Jazzmusikers Miles Davis heisst, soll den Bezug sowohl zu Amerika, dem Herkunftsland von vier der fünf Künstlerinnen, als auch zum sonstigen Programm der Galerie herstellen. Gisèle Linders Galerie ist für stille, nicht effekthascherische Ausstellungen (Monochrome Malerei, Konkrete Kunst) bekannt. Dieser Linie soll treugeblieben werden.

L’exposition ' In a Silent Way', à la Galerie Gisèle Linder et qui se rattache au concept des " Paintings on the move" des musées des Beaux-Arts de Bâle (Museum für Gegenwartskunst, Kunstmuseum et Kunsthalle), a vu le jour grâce à une étroite collaboration entre Gisèle Linder et Marion Wild (New York). Cette manifestation ne se situe pas dans le cadre du programme habituel de la galerie.Il faut ici entendre le terme de peinture au sens lar-ge: au-delà de son acception habituelle d‘huile sur toile, il s’agit en effet de sculptures peintes ou de photogra-phies repeintes. La peinture, pour être comprise comme telle, invite à une réflexion sur différentes oeuvres de chaque artiste. Cette définition élargie permet de voir et d’appréhender les artistes ainsi que le médium dans un nouveau contexte. Plutôt que de présenter des pièces isolées de nombreux artistes, l’exposition s’attachera à montrer des séries complètes d’œuvres de quelques créateurs, afin d’offrir au spectateur une approche plus ap-profondie de leur travail. Le choix du titre " In a Silent Way " fait référence à l’album le plus célèbre sans doute du jazzman américain Miles Davis et évoque ainsi un lien avec l’Amérique, pays d’origine de quatre des cinq artistes présentés, en même temps qu’avec le programme général de la galerie. La Galerie Gisèle Linder s’est fait connaître pour ses expositions "silencieuses" (peinture monochrome, art concret); elle souhaite rester fidèle à cette ligne.
